I take Azathioprine 50mg 4 times a day, are they a good drug as I have had a terrible flare up and I am thinking I may need something stronger. I was also taking steriods but insisted I cut them down from 6 a day to one could this be the reason I am having so much pain now and if so is there a stronger or better drug. I take in total 40 tabs a day 8 tramadol 12 gabapentin for repetative sympathic disorder and the Azathioprine also 2 Amitriptlyn 2 Zimovane 2 Adeal-D3 Tamulosin 1 Predisatone also Mezolar patches 12 microgrames and 8 other various tabs against sickness and rashes etc also when I have real bad screaming pain for my RSD I take Morphine Sulphate 10mg when required. I am 6ft 5 in and 18 stone and 63 years old can you give advice if the Azathioprine are good for me to hold pain back as you can see I have some real bad problems. david

Hi David,

So sorry to hear that you are in so much pain & taking so many tablets!

I am on 75mg Azathioprine, 10mg steroids. These are taken once a day. But i am also on 25mg methotrexate injection once a week. I have been on azathioprine for over 2 years & this combination of drugs have been the most effective as yet.
I have RA & connective tissue disease.
Azathioprine dosage is given according to your weight & also on age. I had my steroids increased when i started azathioprine but gradually had them decreased as time went on.

I think you need to go back to your rheumy consultant or nurse & tell them of your concern & pain. It could be a number of things.

Sorry i haven't been of much help in answering your question, but for me personally, the combination has helped me in controlling the disease & pain.

Gentle hugs coming your way & i hope the doctors can help ease your pain.

Alisa xx

Hi David,

I was on Az. for many many years as a teen and it worked beautifully for me. You are definitely on the correct amount for your weight and height.

It was considered *the* drug 15/20 years ago until the popularity and success of mtx took over from all te other rheumatoid drugs.

So perhaps you need a thorough medication assessment done? It may be due to you taking so many other drugs that the rheumy is hesitant to add/try anything else, how these drugs react to other DMARDs, I don't know.

But, in terms of strength for rheumatoid, Az isn't up there with mtx.

Hope this helps a little!

Amanda
